The market for security people rewards employers who know exactly what they need. Security analysts, engineers, architects, and GRC professionals are in short supply across every state. Many roles require a CISSP or Security+ certification. Federal work often adds another filter: an active Top Secret or Secret clearance. Clearance roles are tight. You compete with banks, hospitals, utilities, and defense firms for the same people. Clearance holders and certified architects can pick among multiple offers within a week.
Hiring goes wrong when the job post does not match the actual work. A vague description that says 'security professional needed' draws the wrong applicants. Some managers forget to list the clearance level until after interviews start. Managers who wait four weeks to schedule an interview lose the candidate to a competitor that made an offer on day three, and then they wonder why the role stays open. You lose good people when your process asks for a CISSP but your screening cannot tell a real one from a paper cert.

How candidates are assessed
We start with the paper checks: CISSP, Security+, CEH, or other certs you list as required. For federal work we verify the candidate's active clearance level and facility access before you spend time on an interview. Then we move to practical questions. A security analyst gets a sample log file and tells us what looks suspicious. An engineer describes how they would segment a network or configure a SIEM. A GRC candidate walks through a control framework and explains how they would document evidence. We also check employment history for gaps and ask about specific incidents the person handled. You only meet candidates who can do the job on day one.
