The market for staff accountants, AP and AR specialists, payroll leads, FP&A analysts, and controllers remains tight. Payroll errors cost trust. Compliance misses cost more. Employers compete for candidates who can open NetSuite, SAP, or Dynamics and handle a month-end close without hand-holding. A CPA adds value for controllers and senior FP&A roles, but many strong hires bring years of hands-on experience and no license. Remote and hybrid roles draw applicants from all over the country, so a clear job description and a fast interview process matter.
Hiring goes wrong when the job post lists every accounting duty, asks for ten years of experience at entry-level pay, and then leaves the salary range blank. Payroll candidates notice. Controllers walk away. Interview panels delay feedback for weeks, and strong candidates accept other offers. Some employers reject solid AP or payroll candidates because they lack a CPA, even when the role does not require one. Another common mistake is asking a controller to also own FP&A, treasury, tax, and HR systems without adding headcount. That creates a role nobody can sustain.

How candidates are assessed
We screen accounting and finance candidates against the daily work. For each role we ask about the ERP they used, the size of the books they handled, and the volume of transactions they processed. Candidates walk through a month-end close from start to finish, including reconciliations, accruals, and variance explanations. For payroll roles we check multi-state tax filing, garnishments, and timekeeping system knowledge. For controllers and FP&A roles we ask for examples of board reporting, budget builds, and audit support. We verify CPA status where the employer requires it.
